The news of Steve Jobs’ passing really hit me, in an unusually strong way. I don’t know if it is because he was only 56 years old, or that he was such a business icon, or that he transformed the way people live and created so much financial value and so much enjoyment for so many. Or maybe it was that in a strange way many of us felt like he was part of our extended family, as his persona and accomplishments have certainly captured our imagination and attention. He was a courageous fighter, against pancreatic cancer, for innovation, for positive change, for excellence, and for beauty.

While it is not rosy or pleasant to read, this article from Ethan Bronner provides an excellent analysis of the socio-political forces internally shaping both Turkish and Israeli politics and impacting geo-political realities as a result. It also sadly underlines that some politicians put their own careers ahead of the wellbeing of their nations. It is easier to score political goals by appealing to ultra-nationalism. True leaders who place their countries ahead of their political careers, and whose leadership qualities are strong enough to enable them to do this while still succeeding in galvanizing their constituents behind them, are rarer.
This New York Times article makes the important point that having the most capable, productive and creative employees are a key component to success in any business. It is important that all team members give 120% and that mediocrity never be tolerated. Thanks to our leadership team, we have the good fortune to be able to work with many great team members who work around the clock with focus and diligence.

A recent article in the New York Times, readjusts the typical focus on Steve Jobs and the evaluation of his career that we have been seeing over the past days since his resignation. This article deems Jobs a role model, for his unique talent as an innovator. Jobs’s fresh thinking, and creative way of looking at things were key components to his success and a source of inspiration for all leaders and companies across various sectors.

Frustrated by our governments “lack of cooperation and irresponsibility among elected officials,” Howard Schultz emailed his team about how Starbucks can alleviate the current uncertain times. But he is not stopping there, according to an article in the New York Times. Schultz has called for a campaign boycott that he hopes will captivate our elected officials attention, and focus them towards creating jobs. This step of leadership is exactly what our country needs at this time, and we are proud to be able to call ourselves his partner.

It is so perplexing that some people care only about power and zero about what positive things they could do with that power.
I am increasingly repulsed by the News Corp organization and think it represents everything that is wrong with our world. It is less its FOX News channel ultra-conservatism than its sensationalist irresponsible news outlets; from the way they exploit people with all their tabloids and the whole ordeal of hacking phones of missing children (http://nyti.ms/ncfID8), to the way they libel people (like calling the woman who sued DSK a prostitute in the NY Post, who is now suing them, http://nyti.ms/rjJG9C) or, prior to turning tables, attacking all French people with embarrassing stereotypes when they were indicting Strauss-Kahn.
I am so perplexed and people that just seem to have no values or morals and accumulate wealth and power as if that is the end, rather than the means to a more productive end.
