Extremists Bring out Extremists in Lebanon
Al-Akhbar in Lebanon (which favors the Hezbollah opposition coalition) reports that the weakness of the Hariri Movement will create a void that will be filled by Salafi groups intent on waging Jihad to defend Sunni Islam against Shiia infidels. While the source is suspect, it evinces a real trend towards further destabilization and tribalism, which will doom Lebanon and impact the region.

Retreat of Al-Hariri movement favors Salafi groups
By Fida’a Ittani
Al-Akhbar (Lebanon), 5/14/2008
Ittani says many Salafi movements are present and they vary in their attitudes from silent opposition to Future leader Saad Al-Hariri to fully supporting him as the leader of the Sunnis. "These groups are the only ones with coherent structures at the ideological, political, technical, and field levels, while if you talk about the Future movement, these groups point you towards Pharaoh [Hariri] and his desolate palaces," Ittani writes. "The Future movement, defeated in Beirut, no longer has any serious influence in the north. The Jihadists have always dreamt of the day in which Sunni liberalism fails or suffers a defeat."

A little more PROOF about the radical absolutist expectations of the extremists attacking efforts to end the conflict…
When the "Boycott" campaign against OVP started in earnest a few weeks ago, one of my staff members suggested we just explain to them the OV platform, and provide detailed answers to the many false accusations and mischaracterizations they were making. I explained I had had discussions with several people from these groups in the [...]

Zubeida, Mahdi, Hamas and Altalena
A couple years back, a comment that was making the rounds among Israeli policy-makers was that "Palestinians need to have their own Altalena." Altalena was a boat that David Ben Gurion decided to sink, even though it carried weapons (and a Jewish crew) destined for a Jewish group that was resisting the British. It was [...]

Informed or Wishful Thinking?
A very interesting article from Reuel Marc Gerecht on Iraq, Afghanistan, Al Qaeda and what I call "pseudo-Islamic terrorists" (militant extremist assassins who usurp and tarnish a noble religion to advance their absolutist aims) appears in the Washington Post. He is either extraordinarily well informed, and providing some real hope, or just engaging in wishful [...]

Hezbollah in Ramalah
Many signs point to Hezbollah’s increasing presence in the Palestinian territories, a sharp departure to Arafat’s model of Palestinian nationalism being the realm of Palestinian groups only. This is among the most serious (and least addressed) developments over the last few years. In my work with OneVoice, one of the things I notice often is [...]
